In a related matter that may affect the Health Department’s situation, the board authorized Mr. McCarthy to look into the possibility of having a private firm evaluate Rappahannock’s public health program.
In a letter dated Sept. 28, Richard Sharp, president of Sharp and Associates, consultants in public and environmental health based in neighboring Orange County, offered to discuss an evaluation program. According to Mr. Sharp, his firm was able to save one locality $90,000 last year without reducing Health Department services.
“It may be worthwhile to ask for more information,” said Chairman Hubert Gilkey, noting that the firm will travel to Rappahannock to discuss the proposal at no cost to the county.
In other action at the October meeting, the board:
• Approved additional appropriations totalling $63,807 for the school budget. Of that amount, $15,807 over what was originally expected comes from the federal government for Chapter I and Chapter II programs and $48,000 comes from text book rental fees and will be used to
