Also on Tuesday, the board formally accepted the offer of the elementary school PTA to provide a radio communcations system for the school bus fleet.
Dr. Gangel said he expects at least five radios “and maybe more” to be installed this year, with priority given to buses making the morning and afternoon runs to Piedmont Technical Center in Culpeper and to buses covering routes through Rock Mills and into the hollows where drivers may encounter problems with high water or icy road conditions. In addition, school cars assigned to the superintendent and the transportation supervisor are at the top of the list to be fitted with radios. The “relatively inexpensive” community-shared repeater system will also include a base station at the School Board office, Dr. Gangel said.
Chairman Beverly Massie asked how maintenance will be handled.
“The first year, it wfll be the i*esponsibility of the PTA,” the superintendent replied.
