Getting to know these critters is more difficult than learning about birds. Listen for a frequently repeated song. Track that sound to its source by slowly approaching the singer. Although you may not find your songster in any field guide, you might jot down notes,
Some species seem to be adept ventriloquists. If you become totally frustrated in your search for the insect itself, try to find a copy of the record album, The Sounds of Insects, produced years ago by Houghton Mifflin Co. If that search is successful, try to identify your insect.
Recognizing and appreciating some of these smaller but no less important species of wildlife in your yard might be a great New Year's Resolution. Just think of what a conversation starter your description of the mating call of the sword-bearing conehead or tinkling ground cricket might be at your next social gathering.
