In the Old Dominion, political campaigns are traditionally polite exercises that rarely degenerate into mudslinging confrontations. But in the past several weeks, how tl\e' 26th-district campaign is being coni ducted has been as much in the news as the issues.
The unsuccessful trailer bill, his vote in favor of an increase in state taxes of fuels and an earlier promisg to meet monthly with constituent 16= cal governments have been cited by Sen. Miller’s opponent, but incor* rectly, the incumbent maintains.
“This is the first time that I’va ever had an opponent publish things that are absolutely untrue. Whether he just allowed his paid people free rein and it was done without his knowledge, I don’t know.”
Mr. Miller recalled that in his lastSenate race and in an earlier race for the House of Delegates, decided by less than 1 percent of the vote, he concluded the campaigns with great respect for his opponents.
“It grieves me that Mr. Chase and I won’t end this campaign as better friends than when we started. I’d like to run for Kevin Miller and not against somebody.”
