Seventh District voters gave Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr. a vote of confidence Tuesday, returning the Republican incumbent to Washington to serve his fourth term.

He soundly defeated his Democratic challenger, David M. Smith of Winchester, by 58 percent to 42 percent in the sprawling 23-county district, known as the state’s most conservative — once the power base of Sen. Harry F. Byrd Sr.’s Democratic machine.
