Those young people, the men said, represent the future of farming.
Looking to that future, they predicted that the county will continue to see the diversification of agriculture which has marked the past 10 years, such as farmland given over to the cultivation of flowers, grapes, organic farming and other non-traditional agricultural uses.
“We will also see the large farms grow out some more,” Mr. Massie predicted, as more small producers find their operations are no longer profitable. Given the cost of machinery and the shortage of labor, the only economy is farming done on a large scale.
But the two men remain optimistic. “We have a lot of opportunities that other generations didn’t have. But we also have a lot of problems ... we hope to turn the tide and change the disadvantages into advantages.”
