How did this multi-talented group of people manage to find its way to Rappahannock and Washington’s Town Hall? Ms Portman said the group wanted to be near a city, and for her husband Washington, D.C. was as far north as he would go.

A recent press release points out that the Rappahannock community contains many artists and others who have managed to make a life that “functions well without shopping malls, fast-food chains and traffic lights.”

Ki Theater received a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts that has been used to employ a parttime arts manager to arrange for a fuller schedule of events. Other grants were used to support the performers in developing “Conference of the Birds,” but Ms Portman believes such funds will become less and less available.
