BLACKSBURG - People who didn’t know better might think that fall is the season for deer to hunt humans than humans hunting deer.
It has been found in Virginia that deer-car accidents and losses start in September, peak in November and carry through January. The peak coincides with maximum deer numbers and the onset of deer breeding season.
How dangerous is it? According to 1987 figures from the Virginia Department of Transportation, an estimated $3.7 million dollars of property damage resulted from deer-vehicle collisions.
And in that same year, 214 persons were injured in 186 accidents involving personal injury. An addition 2,762 deer-related accidents resulted in property damage only, for a total of 2,948 deer-vehicle mishaps in that 12-month period.
Coincidentally, the firearm deerhunting season begins in November and does its share to get the animals moving from place to place. The season begins Nov. 19 and continues in some sections of the Old Dominion until Jan. 5. This combination of hunting and breeding season ensures that deer will be more active and cross over and near highways.
