The gap narrowed in Rappahannock County, 53 percent to 47 percent in favor of Mr. Slaughter, but it still represented a con|prtable margin in this traditionally conservative county.
Unofficially, the district-wide totals reported early Wednesday morning by the Associated Press were 81,200 for Mr. Slaughter and 58,675 for Mr. Smith.
In Rappahannock County, the challenger carried the Sperryville and Flint Hill precincts, while Mr. Slaughter won in Hampton, Jackson, Stonewall-Hawthorn and Chester Gap. County-wide, Mr. Slaughter won by 125 votes, 966841.
More than half the county’s 3,220 registered voters went to the polls.
80.1%
