A voice from Rappahannock may be heard ‘round the world.
Juliana Volkmar, the 16-year-old German, formerly East German, exchange student, hosted this year by the Dawn and Brad Fisher family in Washington, was interviewed by the Voice of America last Thursday, Nov. 1 in Washington, D.C.
Voice of America is a gobal radio network that broadcasts news and other programs in 44 languages, to an estimated 130 million listeners, in over 40 nations worldwide. Established in 1942, broadcasts range from top news programs to popular music to live interviews and pre-recorded programs, like the one Juliana is participating in.
Chosen for the program due to her former East German background, the young woman requested the use of former before East German to recognize her heritage. But, she is also proud to pronounce herself a German, since the two Germanys united in September, ending a 45-year division.
