Farming advocates
In an article in this week’s paper, the formation of the Rappahannock Farmers’ Association is announced.
The group’s stated aim is the preservation of agriculture in Rappahannock County, as well as the preservation of the traditional way of life it provides for many of the residents of our lovely rural county:
We support the group in its aims, and wish it success. We suspect that most of the county’s residents, be they natives or newcomers, also share the goal of preserving a way of life which forms the basis of the county as it has been for many years.
That long-time tradition is under attack from many quarters.
Burgeoning suburban development is pushing out toward the mountains from the Metro D.C. area. Rising land values create nearly irresistable pressures — even if the landowner is determined to see the land remain in agriculture.
