She sees the problems for-artists and farmers as similar. “Agriculture and the arts are at the same place now,” she said. “Agriculture is desperately needing people to decide it is important to support land so it can continue to be farmed. We all have to make decisions. We have to ask, ‘Is art central to quality of life, helping us meet challenges, creating alternatives to what we are finding?’ If not, then we can’t expect art to continue to be supported or to be created.”
Clearly Ms Portman believes that art is central to a life of quality. When she was searching for a “more contemporary” name for the Golden Key, she found the form Ki in a book on the derivation of Japanese pictographs. It came from ancient Chinese and means life energy or life force, and originates from the form which symbolizes rice, the fundamental food of Asia.
