The decline of farming in America has been a concern for some years.
A new organization in Rappahannock County plans to do something about the problem.
The Rappahannock Farmers’ Association, which launched a membership drive this week, evolved from the work of the Agricultural Advisory Committee, a study group formed at the request of the county’s Planning Commission.
Two of the members of the Agricultural Advisory Committee, Lindsay Eastham and James F. Massie Jr., will serve as the chairman of its board of directors and its president, respectively. Both men come from long-time farming families, and they share a devotion to farming and the land — especially the land of their native county.
“We hope that this organization will be the true voice of agriculture and open space in the county,” Mr. Massie explained.
“We want to give the fanners a voice,” Mr. Eastham added. “They have never had a unified voice. We have had a lot of good responses” to the idea.
