ffic, and bigger hotels and bed-andbreakfasts.

It makes me crazy to hear local politicians and businessmen talking about the need for growth, or controlled growth, or healthy growth. Of course they’re talking about population growth, as opposed to growth of productivity.

Now, I’ve got to wonder, why? Why does Manassas have to become as crowded as Fairfax? Why does Warrenton have to become Manassas? Why does a beautiful place like Nags Head have to disappear?

Well, the five hypothetical kids I was talking about are going to grow up, and they have to live somewhere. They have to take vacations. They have to have houses and cars and stores to shop in.

So what am I getting at? Just this. Do you really want to save the environment? Do you want to make the world a better place in the future? If so, and if you are married and thinking of having a big family, think again. Is your biological clock ticking? So is the biological time bomb of over-population. Instead of making babies, get yourself a hobby, maybe reading.. Expand your mind, not the population.

And by all means, recycle. The excess population is already here, so we must treat the environment gently - we have no choice. But remember that there are long-range measures we can take, as well. There is more to solving the problem than separating garbage.
