with an unofficial 56 percent participation. Participation was down from recent elections, when two-thirds voted last year in the state-wide elections. In 1988, a presidential election year, slightly more than 80 percent of the county’s voters cast ballots.
The win surpassed Mr. Slaughter’s margin of victory in 1984, when he defeated Lewis Costello, a Northern Virginia lawyer, to earn his first term in the seat vacated by retiring GOP Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson. He ran unopposed in 1986 and 1988.
Senator John W. Warner also easily won re-election to a third term as Virginia’s senior Senator. The Fauquier County resident faced only token opposition from Nancy Spannaus, a protege of political extremist Lyndon LaRouche. The Democrats did not field a candidate against the popular Republican, who lives on a farm near Middleburg.
Senator Warner received 77 percent of the vote in Rappahannock County, while Ms. Spannaus, who ran as an independent, polled 22 percent. The bulk were write-in votes. A possible explanation for Ms. Spannaus's relatively strong showing was the lack of identification on the ballot of her affiliation with LaRouche, who is serving a jail sentence for tax evasion.
