The Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department is investigating a string of burglaries during the past month in the Flint Hill area, as well as two possibly related incidents in the SperryviUe area and two breakins in Castleton.
According to RCSD Captain Ed Streapy, the burglar or burglars have struck both businesses in the town and a private home outside Flint Hill.
The break-ins began the first week of October, when the Sperryville Exxon and Old Hollow Grocery, on U.S. 211 just east of SperryviUe, were both broken into sometime during the night of Oct. 4. In both cases, coin and currency were taken, Capt. Streapy said.
At the Exxon, the burglars bjoke out a second floor window in the back of the building, while at the Old Hollow Grocery a back door was forced open.
The next week, on Oct. 9, the Flint Hill Store was broken into by someone who entered though a second floor window at the back of the building. Again, the burglary happened sometime during the night, and again only coin and currency were taken.
The burglars then turned their attention to a private home off Route 630, which was broken into sometime between Oct. 12 and Oct. 16. The thieves made off with a small safe containing a “substantial” amount of cash and jewelry, according to Capt. Streapy.
During the last weekend in October, Wakefield School in Huntly was broken into by someone who forced a basement window at the side of the school. Once inside, a soda machine was opened using a key and the change box and coin was taken. A lock was also broken off a refrigera
