This is the first year former East German students have participated in the Youth For Understanding Exchange Program, (YFU), the progam which sponsored Juliana’s visit.
She explained the former East German government, working with YFU volunteers, agreed to sponsor 15 students in their exchange year. Thirty-five students from the country arrived in the United States this past year. Juliana said the other 20 students were sponsored by West German families.
“Now, of course the former East German government cannot sponsor students next year and the program may, hopefully, get others involved,” she explained.
“The radio program will, hopefully, help other students around the world in their decision to make an exchange,” the young girl said, adding the 20-minute interview will be played on-the-air at a later, undecided date.
“We talked about life and how it is different, what I do here with friends and family, and places I will visit,” Juliana said, adding the entire interview was conducted in English and will be translated to several different languages before it airs.
She said the difference in schools and academics was a major part of the interview. “You can’t compare two such different systems,” the young German said, adding in her native country she learns many facts while here, she learns details and discussion.
“I can never remember watching a film in class in Germany,” she said. “ But, here, you do then you discuss it. It’s a new way of learning.”
Juliana said a tape of the program will be sent to her Washington home with notification of its air time.
