The Rappahannock Players have done it again! Mounting “On the Air,” they have mobilized the community with an entertaining review that gladdens us with talent we have seen before and discovers new abilities we look forward to seeing again.
“On the Air” chronicles radio in our lives from 1927 to 1950. For senior citizens, it evokes the world that World War II ended. For others, it is something of an amusing and moving history lesson.
Sean Kilpatrick, Steve Hostetter, Howard Coon and Waldron O’Connor bring back the world of the sports announcer, “The Shadow,” “The Lone Ranger” and other radio features of excitement and pleasure. Linda Heimstra, Linda Orfila, Bob and Virginia Scott, Edith Tennett and Brett Taylor portray how radio brought news, musical advertisements, a crooner, humorous entertainment and a sense of the outside world into our lives.
Many others, children and adults, 27 in all, become part of the scene and what radio meant, for instance, to the people of Rappahannock County long before TV was a fact of life. We are even treated to the charms of children entertainers, Jessica Harrup as “Baby Rosemarie” and Alice Gentry as “Little Alice” - none brighter or more poised than they were singing their songs.
Revealing a treasure of talent we haven’t heard before, story singer Virginia Scott gives us a version of
