II tnose customers dial 911, he explained, their call will be routed to the Culpeper County dispatch office, which will delay the response of fire, rescue or law enforcement to the emergency. “It has caused problems in the past,” the sheriff said, and the potential for a delay in response is a serious concern.

For the 57 customers in the “987” exchange who live in Culpeper County and dial 911, their call will go to the Rappahannock County dispatch office. But because of a special switching arrangement, the dispatcher there can transfer the call directly to Culpeper’s dispatch office with the touch of one button once the location is determined.

Sheriff Woodward cautioned residents that, because the new 911 system is the basic system rather than the enhanced version, the caller must still tell the dispatcher their location. “Once the E-911 system is installed, when the connection is made, we’ve got it. But right now we don’t have that feature.”

Once the enhanced 911 system is in place, the exchanges can be divided down the county line, with customers in Culpeper County being automatically routed to their dispatch office, while their neighbors in Rappahannock will be switched to the dispatch office in Washington
