a number of subjects. The thrust of his agrument was that a limited government is best because it promotes freedom and permits each individual to assume personal responsibility for his affairs. The corollary to his argument was that welfare is both corrupting and demoralizing to its beneficiaries.
This an argument that expresses quintessential Republican philosophy and has an appealing simplicity. The questions I raise briefly in answer have to do with (1) whether the theory can be justified regardless of the fact situation to which it is applied, and (2) what have been some of the consequences of the theory in recent years.
On the first point, it would seem to be fair for the government to allow all its citizens equal opportunity and complete freedom to act without governmental assistance or intervention, so long as all were playing on a level playing field. But, I submit, the playing field is not, and never has been, level.
