Most Rappahannock parents are pleased with the education available in the public schools but believe children would benefit from an afterschool academic program and from a remedial summer school, according to a survey taken during fee day and released last week.
Parents were given the opportunity to fill in the 10-question survey when they came to school before Labor Day to pay for books. About 149 surveys were filled out at the high school and about 218 at the elementary school.
At the high school about 100 parents agreed or strongly agreed that their children would benefit from a supervised academic program offered after school from 3:30 p.m.5:30 p.m. About 25 disagreed or strongly disagreed. At the elementary school about 144 agreed while about 32 disagreed.
At the elementary school about 172 parents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement “A remedial (basic skills) summer school program is needed in Rappahannock County.” About 18 parents disagreed or strongly disagreed. At the high school 126 parents agreed with the statement while about seven disagreed.
Parents at both schools also agreed that “The various programs (reading, math, science, etc.) of the Rappahannock public schools meet the needs of its students” and that “The major emphasis of the Rappahannock County public schools is a strong academic education of its students.”
