Wakefield School began its 20th year on Sept. 9 in its new location in Marshall.
On hand to greet the students were 25 faculty and staff from previous years and eight new faculty.
New faculty members:
• Maureen Beabout will teach Latin and Greek. She was graduated magna cum laude from George Washington University with a degree in classics and classical studies.
Ms. Beabout was the protege of former Wakefield faculty member Marilyn Welch and will be working with Ms. Welch during the next year to insure a smooth transition.
Ms. Beabout is looking forward not only to teaching but also to all of the competitions and Certamen that Wakefield students traditionally participate in.
• Beth DeBergh, although new to the faculty, is a familiar face at Wakefield as her two sons are students and in past years she has acted as substitute teacher on many occasions.
She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond.
In addition, Ms. DeBergh has almost completed the requirements for her master’s degree in elementary education from Shenandoah College.
Ms. DeBergh is certified for kindergarten through grade seven and taught for seven years at several schools in the area.
This summer Ms. DeBergh completed classes on co-operative learning, whole language and children’s literature and is looking forward to implementing some of her ideas in Wakefield’s second grade.
• John Landis is also a familiar face at Wakefield, as he was a 1986 graduate. Mr. Landis received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in architectural history.
While at U.Va. Mr. Landis was a teaching assistant in several architecture classes and following graduation substituted at another independent school in the area.
Mr. Landis will be teaching English and history and should be able to bring a unique perspective to his students as he spent many years as a student at Wakefield being drilled in the stringent English and history curriculum requirements.
• Mary Beth Martin, another Wakefield parent and substitute teacher, will instruct the fifth grade. Ms. Martin received her bachelor’s degree from California State University at Hayward.
Her major was art with a minor in chemistry. Ms. Martin went on to the University of Virginia, where she earned her master’s degree in education. Since graduation she has ‘ continued taking classes at U.Va., most recently a course in reading.
