Working to prevent the tragedy of child abuse, said Ms. Bowen, is a rewarding job.
“It’s so worthwhile. You’re talking about children who have a whole future that can be made or broken by direct intervention,” she said.
“Still, we just get the tip of the iceberg. Our reports here are up because of consciousness-raising. We still know there are so many more out there,” she said.
John Borgens, director of Family Focus, a counseling firm with offices in Washington, Va. and Warrenton, nominated Ms. Bowen and was among those who wrote letters to the state agency who gave her the award.
‘We’re just real proud of her here in the county,” said Mr. Borgens. “It’s so rare that Rappahannock gets any recognition.”
In nominating her, Mr. Borgens wrote: “Her real strength is her extensive knowledge and understanding of children in need—her willingness to go the extra mile to find funds or locate the most appropriate services for a child in need.”
