Plans for replacing a one-lane bridge across Hickman Run with a culvert and improving roadway approaches on Route 729 near Flint Hill in Rappahannock County were approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board at its meeting in Richmond on Thursday, Sept. 19.
The new crossing, located just east of the present bridge, will eliminate existing sharp curves and permit traffic to use the existing bridge during construction.
Estimated project cost is $340,000.
The planned roadway will have two 10-foot lanes with four-foot shoulders and ditch on a 50-foot right-of-way.
A project location and design public hearing was held in Flint Hill in June.
An alternate location suggested at the hearing was evaluated. However, it was dropped because it would add more than $100,000 to the project cost and substantially increase the impact on nearby wetlands, according to VDOT.
