Beverly D. Bowen, director of the Rappahannock County Department of Social Services, was honored by the governor during a ceremony in Richmond earlier this month for her work on behalf of the prevention of child abuse.

The (governor’s Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect presented Ms. Bowen and five other women with certificates of appreciation. In Rappahannock County, Ms. Bowen has worked with other county agencies to develop a protocol for handling reports of child sexual abuse.

The Child Abuse Prescipton Team now consists of herself, school personnel, and representatives from the Rappahannock Sheriffs Office, Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke’s office, Juvenile Probation, the courts and the Health Department.

Ms. Bowen has also organized community meetings to encourage foster care and to train them in parenting skills and inform them about substance abuse issues.
