“Next year we’re not going to have any problem at all; our breakeven point is another 40 students,” he said. The $200,000 deficit from this year will hopefully be made-up by fundraising, he said, and the $300,000 in old debt will have to be carried for the foreseeable future.
Parents have raised the issue of tuition deposits, and Mr. Hopewell said they are being refunded for those families who were “geographically dispossessed.” He said the cases were being considered on an individual basis, pointing out that by contract the deposits were non-refundable.
Wakefield School doesn’t have much time to catch its breath before making plans to build a new institution, preferably in the Marshall area, said Mr. Hopewell.
