He said that while most Americans are environmentally conscious, “you can’t afford to lose jobs” because of regulations. Sec. Mosbacher warned against the “extremists on either side,” but said any middle ground was “tough.”
State Del. George Allen, REarlysviUe, who faces Charlottesville City Councilman Kay Slaughter, D, in the 7th District race for the U.S. Congress, said in a speech that he would promote “workfare” not welfare, and unveiled a plan for resolving what he said was a crisis in the nation’s health insurance.
“You can’t afford to get sick,” he said.
Del. Allen said he rejected any federal healthcare program, saying that it would cost $250 billion and inflate taxes.
Among other proposals, he said that health insurance costs should be 100-pencent tax deductible for the self employed, that insurance renewability should be guaranteed and that he would encourage insurance pools so that individuals could have access to group rates.
Blaming the welfare system for a lack of self-esteem among the unemployed, Del. Allen said “our welfare system rewards idle behavior. We need workfare.”
In an interview earlier, Del. Allen said that able-bodied people needn’t be on food stamps, but that they should first be required to perform community services, such as working in libraries, or delivering meals on wheels.
The workfare force would not be used to replace any government workers, Del. Allen said.
He attacked claims by the Virginia Democratic party leadership that they balanced the state budget, saying that in the private sector, their methods would have resulted in charges of embezzlement.
