To the Editor:
Lee Bird should learn to read. It was Augustus C. Johnson, not Edith Pond, who did not know what “ultraliberal” meant. (That’s A-U-G-U-ST-U-S -C- J-O-H-N-S-O-N and E-DI-T-H P-O-N-D.) I know what ultraliberal means, that’s why I’m not one.
With literacy comes a degree of sophistication, and Mr. Bird would learn that dictionary definitions and political definitions are not always congruent (accordant, suitable, proper - Compact Edition, Unabridged, Oxford English Dictionary, 1971). For instance, one of the definitions he supplied for liberal, “characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts,” omits (leaves out) the important words “with other people’s money.”
