Those who contribute to the fundraising campaign have a need to know how the funds are spent. Virginia’s AHA dollar was spent with 6.7 percent slotted to management and general expenses, 9.9 percent to professional education and training, 14.8 percent for fundraising expense, 18.9 percent for community service, 21.3 percent for public health education and 28.4 percent for research.
Major achievements of AHA research include: the development of artificial pacemaker device, the development and guidelines for CPR, the development of the heart-lung machine, the confirmation of cholesterol as a risk factor for CVD and the confirmation of smoking as a risk factor for CVD.
