After months of intense campaigning, the short but fast-paced race to succeed retiring incumbent U.S. Rep. D. French Slaughter Jr. in Congress ends Tuesday, one of only two Congressional races in the country this year.
Del. George F. Allen, REarleysville, son of the “future is now” Redskins coach and a rising star in state politics, hopes to hold off a surprisingly credible Kay Slaughter, first cousin of the incumbent and a Democratic member of the Charlottesville City Council.
Del. Allen, running in a traditionally conservative district that includes all or part of 17 counties and four cities, has raised about $300,000 to Ms. Slaughter’s approximately $200,000 and has spent some of it on an attack ad this week that portrays his opponent as a Persian Gulf War pacifist.
Del. Allen’s campaign'cites a January 1991 Charlottesville newspaper article that specifically names Ms. Slaughter as among those attending a rally by the Charlottesville Coalition for Peace in the Middle East.
