Darby takes
stand on taxes
Bob Darby announced recently that he supports the Republican-led initiative to repeal the Virginia tax on Social Security.
“Retired people living on fixed incomes cannot afford to have their social security taxed away by the State,” he said.
The tax on Social Security was proposed by Gov. Wilder and passed by the General Assembly, with heavy Republican opposition, in 1990.
It works as follows: Every retired Virginian is allowed to exclude up to $12,000 from taxable income. Since 1990, the retired taxpayer has had to reduce his exclusion by the amount of Social Security he has received, so he effectively pays tax on his Social Security income.
