The new county library continues to serve more patrons than the old library, but the Library Board is having difficulty operating within its budget.
At last Thursday’s meeting of the Library Board, librarian Nikki Lynch presented statistics showing that during the month of September 2,819 books and casettes were circulated, an 81 percent increase over the 1,555 books and casettes circulated during September 1990. The library served 1,242 patrons, an increase of 26 percent compared to the 980 patrons served in September 1990, and there were 74 new patrons, compared to one last year.
Also 501 people used the new’ meeting room and 340 volunteer hours were donated last month.
However, during the first quarter the board spent about one-third of its budget. From the first of July through the end of September the Library Board spent a little over $17,000 out of a budget of just over $50,000.
Office supplies and electrical service are proving more expensive than anticipated. Through September the library had spent $1,700 for office supplies, and the budget for the year was $1,350. The first four months cost nearly $1,200 for electricity and $1,500 was budgeted for the year. Telephone service including a FAX line and the cost of staff salaries and janitorial service are also running ahead of the budgeted amount.
