Democrats and the Slaughter campaign have portrayed Del. Allen as “Malibu George,” a career politician with shallow Virginia roots. The Democrats have tried to accentuate Del. Allen’s waffling on abortion rights in contrast to Ms. Slaughter, an affirmed Pro-choicer. Del. Allen has said abortion should be a state matter, and will not say if he is Pro-life or Pro-choice. He is generally supported by Pro-lifers, however, and Ms. Slaughter has the endorsement of the National Abortion Rights Action League.
Ms. Slaughter has also criticized her opponent for taking campaign contributions from major oil companies even though the 7th District is not an area with much oil-related industry.
Del. Allen has repeatedly contrasted his basic political philosophy, conservative Republicanism, with what he calls Ms. Slaughter’s liberalism.
