No opposition
Only one Constitutional officer and none of the five county supervisors are running opposed this week, and we think we know why.
In the case of the Board of Supervisors, the last four years have demonstrated that they are seriously interested in governing the county in the best interests of its residents, not for political glory, not out of any hidden agenda. By most all accounts, the five-man board is viewed as honest, hard-working people of high integrity. If one or two were running unopposed, we might attribute it to voter apathy. But that all five are, we see as an indication that they are doing their job to the satisfaction of a great majority of county residents.
They would say, probably, that some of the credit should be shared with County Administrator John McCarthy, and we agree. Mr. McCarthy is a well-organized and well-prepared manager whose foresight averted potential disaster during the most recent budget session.
The four unopposed Constitutional officers, Treasurer Frances Foster, Commissioner of the Revenue Beverly Atkins, Clerk Diane Bruce and Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, all perform their duties with efficiently and without fanfare. In a county with too-few professional level jobs, the fact that they are not opposed is also a testament to the positive image they have projected in the community.
Conservation
Gov. Wilder has proclaimed Nov. 3-9 Virginia Natural Resources Conservation Week. The state’s resource heritage will be recognized by the theme, “Conserve to Preserve.”
Conservation and protection of the environment enables the preserving of irreplaceable resources for future generations to rely on. These issues have been on an environmental agenda for many years. Theodore Roosevelt’s said, “The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in value.”
The Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, a non-profit organization that provides policies and programs to the 45 state soil and water conservation districts, notes that conservation is becoming a more conscious effort statewide as citizens realize they cannot live without clean and plentiful resources like soil and water.
