PAVING RURAL ROADS Over 1000 miles of Virginia's Secondary Roads are paved every biennium because of legislation sponsored by Tom Michie. Through his efforts to bring needed funding to rural counties many roads-unpaved since colonial times-have been straightened, widened and surfaced. In this district alone, over $16,500,000 have been allocated under Senator Michie's Unpaved Rural Roads Act. $2,065,000 of this money has come to Rappahannock.
LAW ENFORCEMENT Senator Michie has served on the Courts of Justice Committee for 10 years and has the support of the state police and sheriffs for his position on gun control. Prior to his landmark local government revenue sharing package passed in 1979, the counties had to fund one-third of their law enforcement costs. Now 100% of Sheriff Department funding is from the state. Since the passage of the Michie legislation, over $28.5 million in new money has come to this district for law enforcement. $1,150,210 has come to Rappahannock. Tom Michie is continuing to support legislation to benefit the law enforcement professionals who are on the front lines in the fight against crime.
QUALITY EDUCATION In 1992 the General Assembly will have to address the disparity in funding between rich and poor school districts. Tom Michie has already sponsored and engineered passage of legislation to provide fair funding for roads and law enforcement. Now he is determined to lead the fight for a fair funding formula for public schools so that students in rural county schools are not left behind.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Tom Michie has supported the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act, the Bottle Bill, Scenic River Bills and a Solid Waste Qisposal Site Selection Bill. He is a Jeffersonian Democrat, and believes that local issues, such as Zoning, should be addressed at the local level.
CITY-COUNTY RELATIONS Tom Michie was named ‘the pre-eminent statesman in Virginia’ for his landmark Anti-Annexation Package in 1979. Legislators from rural, urban and suburban districts alike gave him their support on these bills which have provided fairer allocations in both cities and counties and provided alternatives to annexation.
