Papermaker Nina Moore will have her first solo show at Middle Street Gallery entitled “Point in Time,” and it will include collaborations with other artists. The show will run from Nov. 2-24 at the gallery in Washington, Va.
The works in this show explore the possibilities of handmade paper from sheets to relief images to free sculpture. The show’s 20 pieces include Japanese style sheets where the paper shows mountains, people, sun and flowers in response to the beauty of Rappahannock County. Paper pulp floats in water when it is made allowing the artist to capture fluid, abstract effects in some pieces in this show.
The show includes a relief figure of a worker made from a cast, a figure of paper molded over clay and a “free” sculptural piece of the translucent kozo fiber over armature. Ms. Moore learned papermaking from experimentation and artist given work shops. She is sharing what she has learned with Rappahannock County and its artists.
“This show is about using paper in different ways and exploring what I want to make it do and what I want to say. I keep trying to make what God had made and accepting that I can only do what the paper wants to do.
“I would like to capture the feeling I get when I stop gardening (or making) and feel the day done in a piece. Or create a sancturary for the tiny things I made in childhood and school and for things I make now,” she said.
“I have worked on series of figures robed with the seasons of the year. Art is a way of taking time and seeing in satisfy or new ways what’s around me. At this point in time I’m working on seeing the paper and not all it can do,” she said.
