Four of the county’s five constitutional officers are running unopposed this year Circuit Court Clerk Diane Bruce, Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, Commissioner of the Revenue Beverly Atkins and Treasurer Frances Foster.
Ms. Bruce was appointed to fill an unexpired term<14 years ago, and in the intervening period has seen the office undergo , computerization and seen the court docket increase several times over. Ms. Bruce, 45, is a resident of the Town of Washington and a graduate of Longwood College.
Mr. Luke, 44, replaced former Commonwealth’s attorney Doug Baumgardner in 1983 and is seeking his third term. A resident of Flint Hill, he holds an undergraduate degree and a law degree from U. Va.
Ms. Atkins, 33, is a Rappahannock native, a Washington resident and has been Commissioner of the Revenue since being appointed in 1985. She is seeking her second full term.
Mrs. Foster, 54, was born in Sperryville and lives in Washington. She has been treasurer since 1973 and has worked in the Tresurer’s Office since April 9,1962.
Facing no opposition for reelection are, from top: Commissioner of the Revenue Beverly Atkins, Treasurer Frances Foster, Circuit Court Clerk Diane Bruce and Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke.
