The Town and The Inn
' There is a growing concern in the Town of Washington about the influence of The Inn at Little Washington over 1 town doings and more importantly over town land.
This is perfectly understandable. The owners of The Inn also own several other buildings and lots in the heart of town.
However, it is certainly not true that the owners of The , Inn are buying up the whole town. There are currently several buildings in town for sale they have shown no interest in buying. Nevertheless some concern about what they already own and may own in the future is understandable.
However, the form this concern took in the “Battle of the Fountain” was absolutely bizarre. i
The owners of The Inn offered to put a fountain and r plantings in the area created when the comer was squared off and some of the land taken from Trinity Episcopal Church over the years by the highway department was restored to the church. 1
They attenpted to make this donation anonymously, but frotn the beginning opposition to it was based on the asumption that the gift was from The Inn. When the matter came before the Architectural Review Board, member Patrick O’Connell revealed that he was a donor in the process of explaining that he had a letter from Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke expressing the opinion that Mr. O’Connel did not have a conflict of interest in considering the aDDlication.
