A battered, brown 79 Chevrolet Impala conies gliding through our farm gate, cruises across the lawn and lurches to a halt just short of the pond. Slack-jawed, I zero in on the driver. He’s an older man. Quite old. He sits there a minute collecting himself. It’s not like he lost control of his vehicle. He just decided to overshoot the driveway...way overshoot the driveway...like he owned the place or something.
One leg at a time, he slowly eases out of the front seat, careful not to scrape his tender looking eightysomething scalp. Not ready yet to deal with introductions, he opens the back door to get at a pair of well worn crutches. Slowly he steadies himself and stands firm at last. I get the feeling he knows what I’m thinking; “Who are you? Let me see your driver’s license. You are on crutches and driving yourself to the pond’s edge. What’s wrong with this picture?” ,
