The plants would use the nitrogen being discharged, thus reducing the discharge of amonia. The elementary school must upgrade the system to reduce the release of amonia.
Mr. Van Kirk said the firm also studied mound systems, artificial wetlands and package treatment plants. Compared to the Lemna system, the mound and artificial wetland systems are less likely to get approval of the Department of Environmental Quality. They also respond less well to the reduction of flows in summer when school is not in session.
A package treatment plant would be easily approved, but it also would not work well when flows are low, and it would require a full-time operator, he said. With the Lemna system, the schools could work as they do now, making part-time use of the operator who runs the Sperryville treatment plant.
To provide treatment for both schools, Mr. Van Kirk said it would be necessary to pump sewage from the high school to the lagoon. In addition he said the discharge should go to the Covington River instead of
