In a 1994 Annual Report addressed to Town Council, Residents and Neighbors of the Town of Washington, Mayor Morehouse stated that eight years ago “The town identified five major areas that would be critical for the preservation and operation of the Town as it faced the future,” and that those areas are zoning, historic preservation, revenue, safe and dependable water source, and fire and rescue programs.
All of those programs have been addressed by this past council. The town has a new comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance and historic district ordinance. The new water system is nearly complete. The town’s revenue has risen dramatically since the inception of the 2.5 percent meals and lodging tax. The 1995 budget includes $13,000 for the fire department.
The water project was funded with grants totalling $349,100 and a six percent FHA loan of $364,000, to be paid over forty years using current water rates.
Mayor Morehouse said he would seek further funding to extend the water system before leaving office July 1.
He also promises a great display of new fireworks. He said, “We hope you will all be able to attend our 4th of July celebration on the eve of the 245th birthday of The First Washington of Them All.”
