To the Editor:
Dream on, Mr. Sloane, dream on. The Democrats are the “real people’s party, the party that...puts individuals before ideology?” Especially when the individuals are friends of, say, Dan Rostenskowski, or went to school with the Biliary, it does. I’ve noticed that being named Kennedy helps too. Otherwise, not so you’d notice, no.
I can understand why the Democrats have a problem with the Republican “ideology,” consisting mainly as it does of the idea that individuals do a lot better for themselves when they are left to themselves than when they have the government looking over their shoulders and digging into their pockets.
Yes, we Miller supporters have a problem, but I imagine we can cope with it. True, Col. North’s people seem to have a problem working for the party when there is no issue involved that engages their particular passions, and indeed, they have a difficulty distinguishing between their personal desires and the Ten Commandments, but vote Democratic?
We lost a convention, Mr. Sloane. We lost the first fine edge of our enthusiasm. We did not lose our minds.
