As the years went by, Mr. Keyser knew he needed no invitation to visit his homeplace. Frequently he would come by accompanied by a wide range of companions—lady friends on a Sunday drive, old friends of the family. One time he came by with his best friend to the end, Carroll Racer, nephew of Clarence Racer, one of Mr. Keyser’s best boyhood friends. Carroll’s grandfather worked on the Keyser farm. And Carroll’s mother, Mary Virginia Coppage Racer, remembers visiting her grandparents who lived in a log cabin perched on the side of Keyser Mountain. She fetched water from the Keyser spring, a spring Mr. Keyser says never goes dry.
