Once the fox was still, Mr. Freeman grabbed a stick and beat the fox on the head with it. He also went into the house got a rifle and shot the fox.
Then he called a cousin to take him to the doctor. He left the fox lying in the yard. While he was gone some neighbors put the fox’s body in a sack and put it on the oil tank so other animals wouldn’t bother it.
Game Warden Jim Bankston was dispatched but could not find the fox. The next day Mr. Freeman took the fox body to the Health Department. They were able to do the lab work that showed the fox had rabies.
Mr. Freeman has had two shots and is due for two more. He said he is feeling all right and the wounds are healing well. v
“I’ve seen foxes around all the time but didn’t pay attention to them,” he said. “This is the first one that ever tried to attack me.” \
