Mrs. Brown said it is difficult to estimate what effect school programs to limit drug use are having. “We feel the DARE program is working well, but we’re countering TV ads and mass media and the drug markets in the communities around us,” she said. “You cannot accurately measure prevention,” she added. “We think it is working. Without it, it would be worse. Generally we’re pretty close to the national average.”

Mrs. Brown said 63 percent of the seniors report drinking beer on weekends. “We’re missing the parent-community involvement,” she said.

Ted Van Kirk of Dewberry and Davis presented the firm’s report on alternatives for treating sewage to the School Board. Dewberry and Davis was hired to study alternatives for three possibilities: a system for the elementary school only, one that would serve both schools, and one that could serve a possible middle school and possibly the commercial area near the schools.
