Following a ceremony at the elementary school last •*Hiursday to honor Paul Nichols, who died last week after Serving for many years as the Wakefield District representative on the School Board, the remaining four members met in the School Board office to discuss how a new member of the board from the district will be chosen.
. They had before them a letter from Commonwealth's Attorney Peter Luke detailing the procedure that must be followed.
There will be an election to fill the the rest of the term, which runs until Dec. 31, 1999, but because Mr. Nichols's death was within 120 days of this year's election, the special election to fill the vacancy cannot take place until November of 1997. '
The School Board can make an interim appointment,. and the only requirement is that the person appointed by a qualified voter in Wakefield District who is not an employee of the School Board. Once appointed that person has 30 days to qualify by filling out a financial statement and taking an oath of office. The person appointed on an interim basis will serve until the November 1997 election.
The person selected for the interim appointment must receive the votes of at least three of the remaining School Board members. If they fail to make an appointment, the responsibility for doing so will fall on the Circuit Court judge.
The School Board members agreed to advertise the vacancy suggesting'that anyone interested in serving as Wakefield District's representative fill out an application for appointment by the end of the business day on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
