until President Johnson and the liberal Democrats came along with their Great Society and social programs. One of their first acts was to kick God out of the public schools. And they told us that government was the answer to all our problems. And how do you pay for big government? Big taxes! Yet, these programs have failed miserably and cost U.S. taxpayers trillions of dollars.
The government has picked our pockets while causing massive moral decline in- the country. Check out, since 1964, the increases in crime, drug use, divorce, children bom out of wedlock and people trapped in welfare and public assistance programs. The welfare system never promoted independence, but dependence, on the government.
Outside government influence and control, however, we see great success stories — and not just in the Amish community. Consider, for example, the work of Bishop Luke Edwards of the Christ Temple Church in Merdian, Mass., whose story I heard on WPRZ radio (1250 AM) on Oct. 23, during the Larry Burkett "Money Matters" program. The story starts during the early days of food stamps. Bishop Edwards' church had 200 members — 96 percent of them on welfare. To say the least, the bishop was not pleased with the situation. Bishop Edwards says they began reform with prayer and made solid plans for change. It was hard work, but every member was obedient to the call. The bishop first obtained a dealer's license. He went out and purchased food, wholesale, which was sold to members and others, using their food stamps at firlst. With the profits, which they invested, and by the grace of God, the church eventually came to own 4,000 acres of land, which they farm. Additionally they have two cattle feed lots, two processing plants, a 400-head sow operation, three grocery stores, one motel and a day-care service in the church — all run without government funding. Today in their church, not a single member is one welfare! This is an incredible success story. Truly the American dream is possible if you get the government out . and let the American people pursue their goals.
