Things Have Gotten Better the Last
Four Years. Thanks to a Democratic
Administration, we now have:
• Strengthened and expanded America's economy: 10.5 million new jobs; the deficit cut by 60%; lower interest rates on car loans, business loans, and home mortgages; and the lowest unemployment in over 7 1/2 years. • Increased public safety: Adding 100,000 more police to the streets, banning 19 kinds of assault weapons, preventing over 60,000 fugitives, felons, and stalkers from purchasing handguns, and expanded the Brady Bill to stop those convicted of domestic violence from buying guns. • Strengthened America's families: signed the Family and Medical Leave Act giving working Americans the opportunity to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a sick family member without fear of losing,their jobs. • Protected access to health insurance: By making health insurance more portable, protecting mothers and newborns from being rushed out of the hospital in less than 48 hours, and moving toward equal treatment of mental illness. • Opened the doors to higher education: For more education for more Americans, by expanding student loans and lowering their cost, expanding scholarships, and establishing the National Service Initiative, Americorps. • Protected clean water and food: By increasing safeguards for meat and poultry, requiring expanded testing of contaminants, and expanding right-to-know laws. • Made work pay: By increasing the minimum wage for 10 million working Americans, expanded the earned income tax credit to provide tax relief for 15 million working families. • Ended welfare as we know it: By granting waivers to 43 states - resulting in 1.9 million fewer people on welfare, and signing National Welfare Reform Legislation that includes time limits, work requirements, and increased funding for child care. • Made government smaller: And more responsive, by reducing the size of the federal workforce by more than 230,000 and saving $118 billion, while making government more responsive.
