Rappahannock was up 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and then went on a run early in the second quarter holding a 13-2 lead at one point. However Brentsville switched to a man to man defense and gradually climbed back taking a 19-16 lead at half time.
Mandolyn and Rebecca Metcalfe got in foul trouble early in the second half collecting their fourth fouls, and the game generally crawled as both teams were in the bonus for about half the third quarter and all of the fourth. By the end of the third quarter Brentsville had extended its lead to 28-20, but Rappahannock came back and tied the game at 28 before fouls started catching up with the home team. Rebecca Metcalfe and Margo Haynes fouled out, and Brentsville won 38-28.
"That was one tough one," Coach Jenkins said. Brentsville scored 22 of their points from the foul line and only 16 from the floor. Rappahannock had 20 from the floor but only 8 from the foul line. Coach Jenkins said her team really lost the game on the foul line.
Overall she is pleased with the progress her team has made throughout the season. "We've come a long way from out first scrimmage," she said. "We were only blown out in three games and the rest were 10 points and under. I think the girls have made big strides this year."
Against Manassas Park the varsity picked up a 59 to 34 win. Sonya Wigington scored 22 points and Angie Atkins added 14. "They did an excellent job," Coach Laura Conklin said. "Manassas Park had to foul us, and we did a good job of making the foul shots. They showed what they had learned throughout the season."
The game with Brentsville was another story. Brentsville won 73-50. Sonya again led the scoring with 27 points. "That was remarkable," Coach Conklin said "considering they were trying to double team her throughout." Dawn Havstad added 15 points.
Coach Conklin said early foul trouble was the team's main problem as three starters picked up three fouls each in the first quarter. By half time Sarah Gentry and Kylene Wolfe had four fouls. They sat out most of the third quarter and then both fouled out in the fourth.
"We gave up the game in that first quarter," Coach Conklin said.
