Working in a family-owned business is a rewarding experience — but it can also be tough, especially when the business is growing and changes are made.
Often, success and longevity combine to force change. This is happening today at Wanenton Auto Service, a well-established auto body and mechanical service now in its 28th year in business in Warrenton.
The business was started in 1966 in Arlington by Carlos and Ruth Bower. Carlos retired in 1989, and Ruth, who has been running the business office and many other aspects of the operation, began "practicing retirement” on Sept. 1.
Mrs. Bower, who is as well-known for her contributions to the community as she is for her business success. She still comes by the office nearly every day, training her replacements and handling the many details that still call for her vast institutional knowledge.
"My mother is a workaholic," said Norman Bower. He has worked in the family business since the age of 18 and is now taking over the general management duties.
"This business has been her life. I'm concerned about how the business will do without her and I appreciate her help. And I'm happy to say that my mother will continue to represent Warrenton Auto Service in the community.
"I plan to bring new ideas and change some things here soon," he continued. "But right now, I’m just trying to stay on top of things."
